The Effect of Waste Bins Location in Residential Area Using Geographic Information System (GIS): A Case Study in Saudi Arabia

The rapid growth of urbanization and high population density have significantly increased waste and pollution, especially in residential areas. In this regard, the current state of household waste management in the Al-Salama neighborhood of Jeddah city has been examined, focusing on inappropriate disposal practices such as waste being thrown outside bins, which have led to significant environmental concerns. This study aims to propose a model utilizing Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to identify the key factors influencing the optimal location of waste bins. A mixed-method approach is adopted, employing ordinary least squares (OLS) regression analysis to examine the contributions of six factors to each other’s. The result of the proposed model shows that the 2-yard capacity of waste bins and 150 km of walking distance positively influence bin locations. Additionally, High-density areas require more bins and discharge frequency to meet the needs of the neighborhood. This model predicts 24 new bin locations and suggests redistributing them along both sides of the roads. Overall, the Variance Inflation Factor (VIF) remains below 7.5, confirming the model’s robustness and validity. Furthermore, focus group techniques were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed model, ensuring that the identified factors are relevant and applicable in real-world scenarios. This study provides municipalities and waste management companies with valuable insights in making appropriate decisions regarding waste bin location while identifying areas with high waste generation and insufficient waste bin coverage. Ultimately, it aims to contribute to the creation of a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.
