Using Pseudo-Code Technique to Develop Object-Oriented Programming Concepts in a Programming Course

Programming courses teach the programming concepts and then practice these concepts to solve the programming problem simultaneously. Therefore, students find it difficult, and a relatively high failure rate is reported. This study proposed the OOP-SOLVE application, which uses a pseudocode technique to develop Object-Oriented programming (OOP) concepts with less cognitive load. The OOP-SOLVE was introduced in the OOP course, and students' perceptions about the OOP-SOLVE were collected through the survey. The OOP-SOLVE comprises programming problems, class diagrams, pseudocode solutions, test classes, program execution processes and output. Results show that most students perceived that the OOP-SOLVE helped them to understand the OOP concepts. Moreover, it motivated them to learn OOP concepts and engaged them as active learners in OOP activities. Students perceived that the OOP-SOLVE supported them in preparing for exams and other assessment activities. Moreover, students suggested introducing such applications in other programming courses.
