Spectrum Sharing in 6 GHz: Clashes and Synergies

This paper critically examines the technical and regulatory dimensions of spectrum sharing in the 6 GHz band (5.925–7.125 GHz), emphasizing the potential conflicts and synergies arising from its shared use. Mobile network operators’ escalating demand for spectrum, especially within the upper 6 GHz range (6425–7125 MHz), has accelerated efforts to designate portions of the band for International Mobile Telecommunications (IMT), including emerging 5G and future 6G applications. Concurrently, the entire 1200 MHz bandwidth is being targeted for unlicensed use by IEEE 802.11-based technologies (Wi-Fi), further intensifying coexistence challenges. This synthesizes key developments from regulatory entities such as the U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations (CEPT), offering a comparative analysis of technical coexistence studies and policy frameworks. While spectrum allocation remains contingent on national priorities, service requirements, and socioeconomic factors, this paper identifies critical friction points and collaborative opportunities that may shape future connectivity paradigms. By articulating both the obstacles and avenues for harmonization, the study contributes a forward-looking perspective on equitable spectrum governance and sustainable access.
