PIC Bootcamp: An Introductory Hands-On Course on Function, Design, Fabrication, and Packaging of Photonic Integrated Circuits

The photonic integrated circuits (PICs) sector in the semiconductor industry is experiencing rapid growth, largely driven by the demands of datacentres and the bandwidth required for training large AI models. This is accompanied by a critical skills gap due to a shortage of practically trained professionals. To address this challenge, we developed and evaluated a hands-on training program to equip participants with the skills needed to tackle real-world challenges in PIC design and manufacturing. The program, adapted from a University of Bristol summer school concept, was created through collaboration between Anchored In, industry partners (Wave Photonics and Bay Photonics), academic institutions (University of Bristol and University of Southampton), and suppliers, Light Trace Photonics. The course employed a holistic approach, combining practical training in PIC functionality, design and simulation, fabrication, assembly, and testing. Delivered over four months with six intensive training days, the program engaged 17 participants from diverse organisations. Participant feedback, collected through surveys and interviews, highlighted the course’s relevance and practical value, with over 85% of participants rating the course very useful. Suggestions for improvement were noted and will guide future iterations. This initiative demonstrates the feasibility and impact of bridging the skills gap through industry-academia collaboration. The success of this pilot course sets a foundation for broader rollout, contributing to the development of a skilled workforce in the growing PIC sector.
