Design of an Energy Selective Surface with Broadband Stealth Characteristics

In this article, an energy selective surface (ESS) with broadband stealth characteristics is proposed. Through Q-factor tuning method, the stealth bandwidth (BW) under normal operating conditions is greatly enhanced, while ensuring in-band low-power signal transmission and protecting against high-intensity radiated field (HIRF). The proposed ESS is composed of an absorptive layer and a protective layer. The improved split-ring resonators (SRRs) are employed in the absorptive layer, significantly increasing the capacitance of the SRRs and thereby adjusting the Q-factor. The protective layer embedded with p-i-n diodes provides a transmission window for low-power signals. Once exposed to HIRF, the diodes are triggered, resulting in a strong reflection of HIRF. This phenomenon can be explained well by the equivalent circuit model (ECM). Furthermore, a sample with a size of 300 mm × 300 mm has been fabricated. The shielding effectiveness (SE), transmission performance and stealth performance of the sample have been measured, proving its versatility and potential for applications in the field of stealth and HIRF protection radomes.
