AI Agents in Renewable Energy Adoption: Addressing Barriers and Accelerating the Green Energy Transition

The urgency of the global energy transition demands innovative tools to boost consumer adoption of renewable energy. This paper explores the role of artificial intelligence (AI) agents in this shift, focusing on three core questions: (1) how AI facilitates renewable energy adoption, (2) which transition challenges it addresses and (3) what practical considerations guide its deployment. Through a qualitative synthesis of literature, reports and policy documents from 2020–2025, the research identifies key AI functionalities, such as personalized recommendation engines, predictive analytics, gamified nudges and explainable decision systems. These tools help overcome barriers like low consumer awareness, financial constraints and trust issues. The study emphasizes the importance of transparency, fairness and regulatory alignment in AI design. By integrating technological, behavioral and ethical insights, it presents a comprehensive framework for AI-enabled support of the energy transition. Practical recommendations are provided for stakeholders aiming to use AI in achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 7 (clean energy), SDG 9 (innovation) and SDG 12 (responsible consumption).
