Purification of Exhaust Gas from the Marine Fuels Applied to Next-Generation Ships

The fuels for next-generation ships are being studied worldwide to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Specifically, the replacement of heavy oil with alternative fuels such as ammonia or hydrogen is under discussion. However, according to estimates by IEA (International Energy Agency), not all fuel will be replaced by these alternatives. It is estimated that oil, natural gas, biofuel, etc. will still account for approximately 40% of fuel use. For such fuels, exhaust gases will continue to be emitted from marine diesel engines, as they have been until now. In other words, while carbon neutrality and GHG (Greenhouse Gas) emission reduction targets may be met, the harmful substances in exhaust gases will not necessarily decrease. Therefore, the methods to achieve both environmental protection and carbon neutrality are discussed in this paper.
