Transformation of Sensor Systems in the Concept of INDUSTRY 4.0 through the Application of IO-Link Technology

In industrial manufacturing systems, sensor technology plays a key role. Data collection is a highly relevant topic within the INDUSTRY 4.0 concept, and when combined with modern technologies, it enables even a standard inductive sensor to become a smart device. This article compares conventional sensors with modern sensors equipped with IO-Link technology, focusing on their differences in data transmission, diagnostics, and integration flexibility. While conventional sensors offer only basic information and unidirectional communication, IO-Link technology facilitates bidirectional digital data transmission, detailed device diagnostics, and configuration changes during operation. Practical applications highlight the enhanced efficiency of using inductive sensors, not only for detecting presence but also for measuring the distance of metallic objects. The results demonstrate the versatility and practical advantages of integrating innovative technologies into manufacturing processes.
