Comparative Analysis of a Cardinal and a Tern Conductor for a 765 KV Transmission Line in Bangladesh

This paper aims to investigate the performance of the two types of Aluminium Conductor Steel Reinforced (ACSR) conductors. The two conductors for a 765 kV transmission line are the Cardinal and the Tern Conductor. The results show that at 75°C, the power loss of the transmission line per phase made in a hexa bundle tern conductor is 1.92 MW power, whereas power loss per phase with the hexa cardinal conductor at the same temperature dissipates 1.6 MW power for 100 km, Moheskhali- Madunaghat long line. The resistance, ohm/km, for the Tern conductor is 20% higher than the Cardinal conductor. The result indicates that the cardinal conductor keeps the audible noise in the limit due to its surface gradients of 14 kV/cm compared to the Tern conductor. The thermal limit of the line for the Cardinal conductor is higher than the Tern conductor. The cardinal conductor is promising for the 765 kV line.
