WasteWise: Smart Incentive-Based Waste Management System using YOLOv8

Waste management is an acute problem in urban areas, where there is a need for innovative solutions to increase sustainability and working efficiency. This paper introduces an incentive-based intelligent waste management system based on machine learning and sensor technology that automatically identifies waste types and incentivizes users for correct disposal. The system uses a YOLOv8 machine learning model to recognize waste as biodegradable and non-biodegradable through a camera. Furthermore, a load cell sensor is used to measure waste weight, and points are allocated accordingly. Users can exchange the points for shopping, restaurant, hotel, and travel discounts. The system proposed is expected to promote responsible disposal of waste, minimize operational costs for waste management authorities, and enhance environmental sustainability.
