Integrating Evaluative Judgement into Engineering Education Assessment: A Practical Approach

Assessment of engineering students' competencies can be challenging, particularly when assessing technical proficiency and professional aptitude. Among several crucial professional skills, self-evaluation stands out as paramount for engineers. Teaching students this ability to critically assess and reflect on their own work is essential. Given that students often prioritise what is graded, it becomes imperative to incorporate this skill into the assessment process. This approach aligns seamlessly with the principle of constructive alignment, but leads to at least two challenges: integrating professional skills into teaching and assignments, and effectively evaluating them. In this paper, we provide both motivation and an illustrative example of how evaluative judgement can be cultivated through the application of self-appraisal.
