Enhancing Pedestrian Safety and Urban Mobility through IoT-Based Smart Pedestrian Crossings

In urban areas, ensuring pedestrian safety is crucial, especially in developing countries, where road accidents lead to fatalities and injuries. This paper proposes an IoT-based pedestrian crossing system that utilizes a movable zebra crossing, or "travelator" to enhance pedestrian safety and convenience. The proposed model would incorporate sensors to monitor vehicles, optimizing pedestrian safety and efficiency. Implementing an IoT-based pedestrian crossing system worldwide could have several benefits. Firstly, it would improve pedestrian safety and convenience, particularly for vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and people with disabilities. Secondly, it would help reduce traffic congestion and improve traffic flow at busy intersections, bringing broader environmental and public health benefits. Finally, an IoT-based system could enhance the efficiency of public transportation by optimizing pedestrian mobility and reducing travel time. The proposed model can potentially transform urban mobility in any country and address some of the country’s most pressing public safety and infrastructure challenges. This paper briefly overviews how the system was designed and implemented and analyzes how it could impact pedestrian safety, traffic flow, and public transportation efficiency. An IoT-based system for pedestrian crossing can potentially improve pedestrian safety and mobility in developing countries. It can also be replicated in other urban areas facing similar challenges.
