Improving Parent-Child Interaction Using Digital Picture Books

In dual-earner households, where it is difficult to find time for child care, the trust between parents and children tends to decline due to lack of conversation and interaction. To solve this problem, we felt a need to improve the quality of limited child-rearing time and to increase communication between parents and their children. As a tentative solution, we focused on storytelling and created a device-based “Picture Book Read-Aloud Page“ that recognizes the user's face from images captured by the device's camera and subsequently displays an AR mask of the character on the user's image in the device screen, increasing a child's interest and potentially improving interaction with a parent. Positive experiment results suggest the system could be evaluated more extensively in long-term field research.
