Harnessing Vertical Axis Wind Energy for Highway Lighting with Second-life battery storage and Energy Forecasting

Our project brings out the concept of an innovative highway lighting system using second-life lithium-ion batteries, vertical axis wind turbines, and predictive analytics. A Savonius-type VAWT captures power from changing urban wind conditions that gets stored in second-life lithium-ion batteries, optimized for an 80% state of charge. This design makes sure that power remains constant when the wind speeds are low and during the night; hence, this minimizes dependence on the power grid significantly, reducing operational and environmental impact to the lowest minimum. It also includes the LSTM model that predicts the patterns of energy generation based on historical data. The predictive model ensures optimization of the flow of energy by balancing the battery charging and discharging cycles, thereby meeting real-time demand and conserving energy during off-peak hours. The cloud integration of the system provides real-time data transmission, remote monitoring, and control. The data on consumption is collected by an embedded microcontroller through sensors and sent to a cloud, enabling constant analysis of generation trends and battery performance. This project recovers second-life batteries and addresses sustainability regarding electronic waste. It improves the safety, long-term life, and reliability of the battery using a Battery Management System that monitors health and manages charge-discharge cycles. More sustainable, low-cost, and low-maintenance solution than conventional grid-powered highway lighting. It is a reliable device in uncertain conditions of urban wind and supports carbon reduction. It will support the shift toward greener urban infrastructure by adapting to changes made in broader urban energy systems.
