A Comparative Analysis of PID-PSS and Fuzzy PSS Integrated with SMC for Power Systems SMIB included SMES

This paper presents a comparative study of advanced control strategies to enhance the stability of a Single Machine Infinite Bus (SMIB) system integrated with the Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) device. Two approaches are evaluated: a control strategy based on a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) based on conventional Power system stabilizer (PSS) and Sliding mode control (SMC), and an approach combining a Fuzzy PSS with SMC. The study highlights the key role of SMES in compensating energy imbalances and improving transient stability. Simulation results show that integrating FPSS significantly enhances oscillation damping and adaptation to system nonlinearities. The PID-PSS-SMC-SMES approach provides better precision and eliminates the error. In contrast, the FPSS-SMC-SMES combination ensures faster stabilization and more effective disturbance damping, thereby strengthening the robustness of the power system SMIB.
