Frequency Adaptive Enhanced Reduced-Order Generalized Integrator Control for Operation of DVR

This paper introduces a fundamental sequence component extractor using a frequency-adaptive enhanced reduced-order generalized integrator (FAEROGI)-based control scheme, developed to optimize the control of dynamic voltage restorer (DVR). The proposed control scheme reliably extracts fundamental positive sequence components (FPSCs) even under voltage distortion, offering advantages like a simple design with lower complexity, faster dynamic response, elimination of phase-lock or frequency-lock loops, and no need for low-pass filters. Traditional controllers, such as Proportional Integral (PI) controllers, have limited gain coefficients for optimal voltage regulation. This issue is addressed through the implementation of two distinct active disturbance rejection controllers (ADRCs) that regulate DC-link and load voltages, resulting in improved reference load voltage generation. To achieve optimal gain, ADRCs are tuned using the Cuckoo search optimization (CSO) algorithm, inspired by the Cuckoo bird’s adaptive foraging behavior. The CSO-optimized ADRC controller demonstrates superior performance, achieving minimal overshoot and faster settling times compared to a CSO-optimized PI controller. The FAEROGI control scheme is modeled and simulated in the MATLAB/Simulink environment, with performance evaluated under various grid voltage disturbances. Experimental results validated with a dSPACE board confirm the effectiveness and accuracy of the FAEROGI-based control technique.
