The effect of the electric field of the grounded electrode on the capacitance of compressed-gas capacitors

Summary form only given. A loss tangent between an earthed electrode and a high-voltage electrode on the order of 10/sup -2/ has been measured in a 100-kV capacitor. This induces heating of the electrodes, which results in a slow irregular increase in capacitance. Thus, capacitors do not exhibit high stability at rated voltage. For measurements requiring high stability, the working voltage is usually limited to 1/3 of the rating.<>
