Evaluation of Secure Email Awareness: A Case Study

This study explores the level of awareness regarding secure email practices among university students in Bahrain and the UK, specifically focusing on their use of institutional email systems. Email is a primary communication tool in academia, yet students often demonstrate limited awareness of essential security measures, such as encryption and signing. The research investigates the frequency with which students use email for both academic and personal purposes, providing context for the importance of secure email practices. Additionally, the study examines students’ awareness of common email-related threats, including phishing, hacking, and data breaches. It also assesses whether students engage in proactive security measures, such as scanning email attachments for malware, verifying senders through email signing, and using encryption to protect sensitive information. By comparing students from Bahrain and the UK, the study aims to identify any cultural, educational, or institutional factors influencing email security practices. The findings are expected to inform the development of targeted educational initiatives to enhance email security awareness, thereby equipping students to protect their email communications better, reduce exposure to cyber threats, and promote safer digital environments across both regions.
