5 Distinctive Letterlocking Styles: Twelve Key Examples

In this section we will take a close look at twelve historical letters, written on paper from the 1580s to the 1970s, that demonstrate some distinctive features or techniques of letterlocking. This selection is by no means exhaustive, but these letters all help explain aspects of the field of study—not only the kinds of evidence you can find but also where you might look for that evidence and what you might do with it as a researcher or practitioner. We start this section with the triangle lock, which is emblematic of so much about our findings and which has been a constant feature of our work and teaching for more than two decades. After that, we progress by letterlocking category, starting with LC1 and ending with LC30.
