Introduction to embedded systems for health monitoring: concepts and applications

The science of health monitoring has undergone tremendous change in the recent past primarily due to the rapid change in the phase of technological change, despite this the role of the embedded systems in this transformation has been highly instrumental. This paper presents an in-depth analysis of the fundamental concepts and real-life applications of embedded component systems within the healthcare industry. We define embedded systems and identify its chief constituents: sensors, data module connectivity, and microcontrollers. Then, we turn our attention towards other health monitoring secondary equipment, wearables and remote sensors. To concentrate on what major metrics they capture, and how these are influencing patient care. In the development of effective health monitoring solutions, key considerations include power management, device size and comfort, and data accuracy. We will also report some real-world applications and case studies that show the practice of embedded systems in devices like fitness trackers and smartwatches. Some of the challenges and future directions include issues on data privacy as well as interaction with these systems for newer emerging technologies. The main objective of this paper is to provide researchers, engineers, and medical professionals who are interested in the relationship between embedded systems and health monitoring with a solid foundation of knowledge in this area.
