Power Quality Disturbances and Detection Methods: A Brief Review

Power quality (PQ) issues are becoming diversified due to non-linear nature of loads, high renewable energy (RE) integration to grids, and extensive use of power electronics-based devices. Accurate detection and classification of PQ events will help in ensuring good quality of power being supplied to customers. Knowledge of existing methods will help in development of advanced techniques of PQ detection and classification. Hence, this paper presents a brief overview of PQ events, different stages of automatic PQ recognition, methods applied for detection and categorization of PQ disturbances, and impact of RE on PQ. Relative strengths and weaknesses of commonly used PQ detection and classification methods are presented at the end of paper. This review is helpful for designers, researchers, and engineers working in the field of power quality.
