A Stand-Alone System Utilizing Switch Inductor and Voltage Lift Based High Step-Up Converter

This paper explores the operating principle, performance evaluation, and benefits of a newly derived high-gain converter topology based on a switch inductor and voltage lift cell through theoretical analysis. Advantages of converter which include a single switch, easy control, high voltage gain and reduced voltage stress, are confirmed through MATLAB based simulations and experimental work. Its application is purposed in stand-alone photovoltaic (PV) and battery integrated system including a bi-directional DC-DC converter to maintain a constant 380V at the DC grid. The performance of the proposed PV and battery integrated system are explained, with a simulation model built for a 1289W PV array and a 722W resistive load. Performance is discussed for dynamic changes in irradiation. Results were obtained for dynamic changes in PV supply irradiation, ranging from 400 W/m² to 800 W/m². Additionally, a low-power prototype hardware setup was developed to analyze the performance of the proposed high-gain converter and results were gathered under the supply voltage variations.
