Synchronous Binary Counter Operating Continuously with a Small Clock Period

Synchronous binary counters are a crucial component of VLSI design, but they often struggle to keep up with high rates, especially in larger meters, leading to long transmission chains and high fanout values. This study introduces an innovative model for synchronous binary counting that guarantees efficient performance for counter sizes ranging from 8 to 128 bits. By incorporating a 1-bit Johnson counter, this new design simplifies the hardware and eliminates propagation delays. Experimental tests have shown that this streamlined structure requires fewer flip-flops, directly correlating with the counter size, and can operate at clock frequencies up to 2 GHz.
