Topology Optimization Design of W-Beams of Guardrails Based on LS-DYNA

In order to improve the safety performance of roadside W-beam guardrails, a topology optimization method was proposed. The guardrail model was established with LS-DYNA. By collision simulation analysis, a simplified model was established. Based on the simplified model, the equivalent static load method was used to optimize the guardrail model. The collision simulations are carried out on the guardrails before and after optimization, and the crash test results show that compared with the guardrails before optimization, the energy absorption level of the W-beams and plates after topology optimization is improved, and the mass per unit length is reduced by 8.3%, and some indexes are better than the original guardrails. The topology optimization method provides a systematic scheme for the optimal design of guardrails, while the equivalent static load method expands its application in solving nonlinear problems such as collisions.
