Graph Theoretic Approach Based Cyber Contingency Assessment of Smart Power Grids

The rapid advancement of information and communication technologies and their widespread integration into power systems has transformed modern grids into Cyber- Physical Power Systems (CPPS) also known as smart grids. Owing to the strong interdependence, cyber anomalies can have a significant impact on the physical power grid. Hence, it is essential to evaluate and prioritize cyber contingencies. This paper introduces a novel approach for quantifying cyber contingencies, employing the Cyber Contingency Quantifying Measure (CCQM) derived through the Cyber-Restrained Optimal Power Flow (CROPF) problem. The graph theoretic approach is used to model the cyber-physical smart grid. This approach does not require complex and computationally intensive cyber-physical co-simulations. The proposed algorithm's effectiveness has been assessed through practical demonstrations on two standard test systems. These results illustrate the proposed approach's efficacy in efficiently prioritizing cyber contingencies and accurately quantifying their impact on the energy grid.
