Integrating NCMRWF Numerical Weather Model for Improved Solar and Wind Power Forecast in Southern Region REMC

Given the large-scale integration of renewable energy into India's power system, the Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) has focused on the forecasting, scheduling, and accounting of these energy sources at inter-state level. To support the planned integration of 500 GW of renewable energy into the Indian electrical grid, the Commission introduced regulatory provisions and an implementation framework. Considering the variable nature of renewable energy generation and its impact on the interstate grid, accurate forecasting and scheduling of power have been prioritized. Regional Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMC) adhere to uniform practices for integrating renewable energy, ensuring its visibility, forecasting, and scheduling. Forecasting is crucial for the efficient dispatch of renewable energy generation by Regional Load Dispatch Centres. Wind and solar generating stations can use day-ahead or intra-day forecast from Regional Renewable Energy Management Centres (REMCs) for scheduling purposes, in accordance with CERC regulations. This paper discusses the performance of Internal Forecasting Tool (IFT) of SRLDC REMC system using weather forecast data from National Centre for Medium Range Weather Forecasting (NCMRWF) an indigenous organization, its challenges & scope of improvement.
