A Pragmatic Radiation Pattern Measurement Technique for UHF RFID Reader Antennas

Ultra High Frequency (UHF) Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is one of the widely used Internet of Things (IoT) technologies for Automatic Identification and Data Capture (AIDC). A typical fixed UHF RFID system consists of an RFID reader, an RFID tag, and an RFID reader antenna. The RFID antenna is usually a high-gain far-field antenna with single or multilinear polarization. The reader antenna is used to determine the volumetric read zone, ordinarily in the range of half a meter to several cubic meters. Traditional antenna radiation patterns are impractical for systems integrators to effectively deploy a system that can accurately detect tags in an exclusive area and not detect any tags in the area that is not of interest. The proposed radiation pattern measurement technique is not only novel but also pragmatic and would be very useful to set up robust RFID systems by Systems Integrators and Solutions Providers.
