Recent progress of three-dimensional current collector for lithium metal battery

Lithium metal battery has become a research hotspot due to its high capacity for energy, light weight and extended battery life. However, issues with the lithium metal anode include lithium dendrite growth, unstable solid electrolyte interface (SEI) and volume variation. Three-dimensional current collector materials have attracted wide attention because they can effectively alleviate these problems. First, the growth of the lithium dendrite and the impact of SEI are covered in the mechanism of lithium metal electrodeposition. Subsequently, the latest progress of three-dimensional carbon-based, metal-based and composite current collector materials is reviewed in detail. These materials’ large specific surface area, even charge distribution, and increased lithium affinity have all greatly enhanced the electrochemical performance of the lithium metal anode. In addition, the strategy of modifying the threedimensional current collector by increasing lithium affinity sites and inducing uniform nucleation is presented. Lastly, the forthcoming development direction of three-dimensional current collector materials for lithium metal batteries is prospected.
