Design of Self-Calibration Comparator Using CMOS Technology

In precision measurement systems, comparators play a crucial role in ensuring accurate and reliable operation. Traditional comparators often require frequent calibration to maintain their accuracy, which can be costly and time-consuming. To address this challenge, the concept of a self-calibration comparator has emerged as a solution. This paper presents the design and implementation of a self-calibration comparator that integrates calibration functionality within the comparator circuitry itself. The key innovation lies in the inclusion of built-in reference standards and feedback mechanisms that continuously monitor and adjust the comparator's performance. The design focuses on achieving high accuracy and stability over extended periods without the need for external calibration interventions. Simulations were performed using Cadence Virtuoso in a 90nm CMOS process to evaluate key performance metrics such as input offset voltage, power dissipation, and slew rate. The results show that the self-calibration comparator significantly outperforms conventional comparators, reducing the input offset voltage from 300.1mV to 20mV. Additionally, it demonstrates a fast response time with a slew rate of 3.2V/ns and consumes 10mW of dynamic power. While the power consumption is higher than in traditional designs, the accuracy and reliability gains make the self-calibration comparator highly suitable for high-precision applications, such as industrial metrology and scientific instrumentation. From this one can conclude that, self-calibration comparator represents a significant advancement in comparator design, offering improved accuracy, reduced calibration requirements, and enhanced reliability for critical measurement applications.
