Assessing Circuit Breaker Gas Pressure Using Temperature Analysis

Monitoring gas pressure in circuit breakers is essential to ensure dielectric strength and effective arc-quenching performance. This study presents a smart thermal monitoring approach for assessing circuit breaker gas pressure changes inside the arc chamber, enabling the detection of indirect and real-time gas leakage. Simulations were conducted to analyze the circuit breaker's thermal response under various gas pressure conditions. Results indicate that reduced SF6 pressure can lead to contact temperatures exceeding the IEC 62271–100 limit of 110°C, due to diminished heat transfer efficiency. This approach emphasizes the importance of simultaneous gas pressure and temperature monitoring as a predictive maintenance tool. It enhances circuit breakers' reliability and operational safety by allowing early detection of gas leaks and preventing equipment damage.
