Pressure Sensor-Controlled Prosthetic Socket for a Bio-Inspired Knee Joint

The human knee is one of the most complex joints in the body. Recent advancements in prosthetics have enabled above-knee amputees to return to daily activities with minimal disruption. This paper explores the design of a bio-inspired knee joint that utilises force-sensitive resistors (FSR) within a prosthetic socket. These sensors detect the pressure exerted on the socket walls during the swing phase of the gait cycle and trigger actuators that control knee movement. This approach allows for more natural locomotion compared to current prosthetic knees. The aim is to mimic the natural knee's structure, incorporating designs based on MRI scans and combining mechanical and electrical components to create an elegant solution for a smoother, more natural gait in trans-femoral amputees. Initial results show promise, providing a solid foundation for future developments in prosthetic knee technology.
