Kinetic Butterfly Installation

At the Georgia Institute of Technology, the Interdisciplinary Design Commons (IDC) implemented a design solution to help students restore mental clarity during demanding college experiences. Grounded in the Attention Restoration Theory (ART), this project alleviates mental fatigue and improves concentration by integrating a nature-inspired visual element within a busy workspace. The Kinetic Butterfly Installation (KBI) is a large-scale robotic artifact emulating a butterfly wing's delicate, fluttering motion using rigid, mechanical materials. This paper traces the Research through Design (RtD) process, analyzing KBl's outcomes. Findings show the KBI exemplifies how robotic, nature-inspired installations foster the restoration of mental capacity and clarity in college environments.
