Comparative Analysis and Pre-Feasibility Study of Electric Vehicle Charging Hub Architectures

In this paper, a comprehensive technical and economic analysis (pre-feasibility studies) is conducted for various architectural options of electric vehicle charging hubs with a common AC and DC bus. A review of the main topologies of power converters used in electric transport charging infrastructure is presented. The problem of choosing a rational architectural option for developing a charging hub is formulated. A simulation model of a charging hub has been developed, enabling minute-by-minute daily power consumption profiles of charging stations considering specified statistical distributions of electric vehicle charging station usage. Additionally, the model allows for simulating the charge and discharge cycles of the energy storage system. Based on the simulation results, the required capacities of the charging hub elements were determined, parameters for power converters were selected, and an assessment of the electricity losses in the power converters and supply cables was performed using the dependencies of the converter efficiency on the load. Based on the capital cost estimation for power converters and annual expenditures on electricity and power accounting for electricity losses in the power converters and supply cables, conclusions were made on the economic efficiency of the considered charging hub architecture were drawn.
