Photovoltaic Solar System for Energy Management Enhancement in an Educational Building: A Case Study

AI-Alamein city is one of the new developing cities in Egypt. The city location is characterized by mostly sunny weather, which enables harvesting solar energy either by solar heating or by having PV system to generate electrical energy. In this paper, the case study considered is for a building in the Arab Academy for Science, Technology and Maritime Transport (AASTMT), AI-Alamein City, Egypt. Toward sustainable and green energy utilization, AASTMT ensures energy management enhancement techniques among its strategies for expanding the campus to accommodate more students. The campus has six educational buildings, and a new educational building is considered in the expansion plan. AASTMT AI-Alamein campus is grid connected, and no renewable energy sources are used so far. From an environmental point of view, it is required to align with the international goal towards reducing $\mathbf{CO_{2}}$ emissions by installing renewable energy sources. This also leads to a decrease in electricity bills from an economic point of view. This study investigates the impact of utilizing photovoltaic (PV) solar system on electric energy consumption of an educational building by using PVsyst software. This paper aims to study the energy consumed by one of the operational buildings, so that a PV solar system is proposed to minimize grid consumption. The results reveal a promising $\mathbf{CO_{2}}$ emissions reduction with accepted bill savings.
