On Formal Specification of Automated Lane Keeping Systems Requirements

Automated Lane Keeping Systems (ALKS) are regulated by UNECE Regulation No. 157, which outlines safety and performance requirements for these systems. However, the natural language used in such regulations often contains ambiguities, making it challenging to derive clear, verifiable specifications for validating the behavior of automated driving systems. This study tackles this challenge by presenting a systematic methodology for formalizing regulatory requirements, focusing on temporal constraints. A case study demonstrates the approach, highlighting the process of formalizing and validating requirements using Linear Temporal Logic. By transforming ambiguous regulatory language into precise, machine-verifiable specifications, this work supports certification and homologation processes of automated driving systems.
