Cooperative Scheduling of Multi-Type Pumped Storage Hydropower Units Considering the Uncertainty of Wind Power

Pumped storage hydropower (PSH) is a clean energy storage technology that can effectively reduce peak-valley differences, thereby enhancing system operational stability. Traditionally, most PSH plants adopt fixed-speed pumped storage hydropower (FS-PSH) units. In recent years, variable-speed pumped storage hydropower (VS-PSH) units are being increasingly integrated into the plants due to their adjustable pumping power and higher operating efficiency. The cooperative scheduling of FS-PSH and VS-PSH units is a possible solution to better reduce the peak-valley differences. In the meanwhile, a large scale of wind power is integrated into the power grid, resulting in uncertain peak-valley differences. In this context, a two-stage stochastic optimization model is proposed for the cooperative scheduling of FS-PSH and VS-PSH units by accounting for the wind power uncertainty. The model considers the operation constraints of both FS-PSH and VS-PSH units, as well as their coordinated constraints. To make the proposed model tractable, binary variables are introduced to reformulate the nonlinear problem as a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model. The experimental results demonstrate that the model can effectively reduce the system operating cost and enhance the peak shaving performance.
