Dynamic Power Sharing Between Charging Guns in Off-Board Chargers

Automobile manufacturers are adopting different charging standards for their electric vehicles (EVs), which vary geographically. Hence, off-board chargers/wayside DC fast chargers must be equipped with multiple charging guns to cater to various requirements of EVs that pertain to particular geographical areas. Recently, most EVs have been equipped with large-capacity batteries to cover more distance on a single charge. The charging infrastructure needs to be upgraded to charge these high-capacity EVs in a shorter time, which calls for a huge investment. This paper proposes a dynamic power-sharing algorithm for off-board chargers to reduce charging time by effectively utilizing the existing charging infrastructure. Without any interruption in the EV charging process, the power rating of the off-board charger can be re-configured according to the charging requirements and the availability status of the other charging gun. The proposed algorithm is experimentally verified and tested on an indigenously developed 122kW fast charger.
