Harmonic Profile of Various Loads Used in Distribution System of Qatar Utility

This paper presents a comprehensive investigation of the harmonic profiles and total harmonic distortion (THD) of individual Qatari household loads, both dominant and non-dominant. The study analyses the harmonic characteristics of major appliances such as refrigerators, air conditioners and televisions. It reveals a significant THD of 65.12%, indicating significant harmonic contributions from these dominant loads. At the same time, a more modest THD of 13.71%, indicating a comparatively cleaner harmonic signature, is shown for non-dominant loads such as LED lamps, washing machines and hairdryers. The paper also looks at the specific harmonic components generated by each load, shedding light on the distinctive nature of their harmonic distortions. Highlighting the collective influence of both dominant and non-dominant loads on overall power quality, the cumulative THD for all domestic loads is measured at 30.36%.
