Renewable Energy-Based Hybrid Power Conversion System for Induction Motor Driven Light Electric Vehicle

This paper validates a solar photovoltaic (SPV) based induction motor (IM) system using a modified quasi-impedance source inverter (qZSI) for electric vehicles. The system employs a Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) algorithm to control the Solar Photovoltaic (SPV) output, connected to a modified qZSI. This study covers the design, control, and performance analysis of a powertrain for electric vehicles driven by a battery and solar-fed induction motor. The DC-link modified qZSI converter offers high gain voltage conversion in both charging and discharging modes, interfacing with the low voltage battery. Solar energy is integrated through the modified qZSI, which manages MPPT, maximizes efficiency, and reduces current ripple at the SPV end. The Perturb and Observe (P&O) technique is used to maximise the PV panel's power output. The induction motor operates in open-loop mode, and active power flow is controlled via DC-link voltage regulation. This setup generates an AC voltage higher than the DC input based on the instantaneous duty cycle, unlike traditional VSI systems. The proposed system uses a three-phase hybrid qZSI converter to power an induction motor drive, which is isolated with an isolation transformer for safety. The qZSI boosts the DC voltage of the solar array, with switches controlled by Pulse Width Modulation and shoot-through signals from the MPPT connected to the SPV. Benefits include fewer required switches and improved output voltage quality, and efficiency, enabling a variable frequency induction motor drive and extending the driving range. Detailed analysis, including mathematical expressions and real-time simulations, has been conducted using the Typhoon HIL 402 real-time emulator.
