Electric Spring and Smart Energy Meter for Power Factor Correction of Industrial Loads

Electric Spring (ES) technology has been suggested for voltage regulation, power regulation, active/reactive power compensation, renewable energy sources integration, grid stability, demand side management and more. In this paper Diode Clamped Converter based ES (DCC-ES) is presented for power factor (PF) improvement in three phase industrial loads that are resistive-inductive in nature. In this paper ES is implemented with Smart Energy Meter (SEM). This scheme can significantly improve PF in industries, reducing energy bills and penalties. This scheme can relieve grid burden and improve current carrying capacity in conductors, it opens new possibilities for the ES to be utilized for distributed implementation in industries along with Smart Energy Meter. The data from SEM can be used for load forecasting, monitor and control, accurate billing, real time tariff and so on in smart grids.
