Improvement of Power Supply Efficiency and Reliability Through Optimized Charging Discharging Scheduling and Sizing of Battery Energy Storage System

The navigation towards continuous and quality electric supply to electric consumers has become essential in the present day. Thus, the utilities acknowledge the need for an inverter-coupled battery energy storage system (BSS) to fulfill the requirement of uninterrupted and quality power supply to critical customers. This paper investigates the techno-economic performance of power delivery along with reliability criteria by identifying suitable size and operation scenarios for the BSSs in an electrical distribution network. This paper considers the daily and seasonal variation of residential, commercial, and industrial customer demands and formulates the BSS planning problem to decipher hourly battery charging and discharging schedules for multiple seasons. The comparison of different techno-economic indices concerning non-reliable, reliable, and completely reliable power supply has been discussed to benefit both the electric consumer and power distribution utilities.
