Leveraging Synchrophasor Data Analytics for Grid Events: A Case Study of Telangana

Synchrophasors have become an indispensable tool for system operators, providing dynamic insights that enhance cognition, improve situational awareness, and instil confidence in decision-making. These devices serve as a primary source for real-time event detection and post-event analysis within the State Load Dispatch Centre. This research extends beyond traditional uses, focusing on synchrophasor analytics for detecting and classifying power system events such as generation/load loss, faults, and oscillations under the constraints of limited Phasor Measurement Unit (PMU) coverage in the Indian context. It integrates these analytics with Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) systems at the Telangana State Load Dispatch Centre (SLDC, TGTRANSCO), offering detailed case studies that illustrate the practical application within the Telangana SLDC. The insights gathered have laid the groundwork for developing advanced fault analysis reporting tools, significantly improving the situational awareness of system operators and reducing downtime for restoration. This paper underscores the development of a real-time event detection engine that utilizes synchrophasor data streams to empower operators to assess and react to the severity of power system faults promptly, thereby enhancing the overall reliability and resilience of the grid.
