Summary

In the computer world, there are two primary ways to store and render visual information. These are vector graphics and raster graphics. One of the forms of image processing performed by Microsoft 365 allows it to determine the nature of the content. When image tagging is enabled for a SharePoint site, and images are added to a library, a new column called Image Keywords becomes available. Optical character recognition (OCR) examines an image to look for text characters. SharePoint Premium also supports the use of OCR in two ways that are independent of the content center/document processing capabilities. First, OCR can be enabled in Microsoft Purview to allow it to perform its information governance analysis based on image data. Second, OCR can be enabled for images in SharePoint libraries, allowing for full‐text‐based searches and general extraction of the text from images.
