Portable Mass Spectrometers for In-Situ Analysis in Near-Space

The study of near-space environments is attracting increasing interest due to its potential for scientific discoveries and technological advancements. Analyzing chemical compounds in this region is crucial for understanding atmospheric composition, monitoring space weather, and assessing potential hazards. Portable mass spectrometers (PMS) have become essential tools for this purpose, providing realtime, high-precision data on-site. These instruments offer significant advantages over traditional laboratory-based mass spectrometers, including enhanced mobility, reduced sample preparation time, and the ability to operate in harsh and remote environments. The use of PMS in near-space missions allows for the immediate identification of volatile organic compounds, aerosols, and trace gases, offering critical insights into atmospheric dynamics and composition. Additionally, bioanalysis in near-space is becoming increasingly important, as detecting biological particles such as microbes and pollen can enhance our understanding of life's spread and its interaction with the atmosphere at high altitudes.
