MAP Algorithm for Frame Padding Length Estimation: A Classic Example of Decoding With Natural Redundancy in Protocols

This letter aims to provide a general methodology for addressing forward error correction (FEC) issues in protocols. Taking the estimation of frame padding length in wireless relay lines as an example, we detail how Shannon’s information theory and classical channel coding and decoding theory can be utilized to guide the modeling, solution derivation, and performance evaluation of FEC issues when certain natural redundancy (NR) is available. Firstly, we analyze the encoding rules and codeword structure of the NR codes involved in this problem. Subsequently, we derive the maximum a posteriori (MAP) solution and the theoretical error rate. Finally, simulation results demonstrate that the performance of the proposed MAP method aligns closely with theoretical expectations and significantly outperforms methods that disregard the utilization of NR. The ideas presented in this letter can be extended to address other NR decoding problems.
