Design and Analysis of CMOS-Based Common Source and Cascode Amplifiers Using 90 nm Technology

CMOS-based amplifiers are extensively utilized in modern electronics due to their efficiency in power consumption and ability to integrate densely. These amplifiers harness the complementary characteristics of NMOS and PMOS transistors to achieve high amplification and broad bandwidth. However, traditional CMOS amplifiers often exhibit lower gain due to factors such as suboptimal width-to-length ratios and improper biasing. This study investigates CMOS-based common source amplifiers and Cascode amplifiers using the Cadence Virtuoso environment with the Generic Process Design Kit 90 nm (gpdk090). The designs are configured with a 2.5 V DC source and utilize paired NMOS and PMOS transistors, each with a gate length of 100 nm. A thorough analysis encompassing transient, DC, and AC characteristics was performed for both types of CMOS amplifiers. The results indicate that the common source amplifier achieved a gain of 404, whereas the Cascode amplifier demonstrated a higher gain of 499. These findings validate the superior performance of the Cascode configuration in terms of amplification efficiency. The study underscores the robustness of these amplifier designs, affirming their suitability for integrated circuit development and analog circuit applications.
