Maturity of open-source Digital Twin platforms in IoT

Digital Twin (DT) platforms are becoming essential tools for different industries in production processes and reliability testing. At the same time, they are considered to enable research in areas like novel technologies for 6G and future Internet of Things (IoT). For research purposes, open-source platforms are of particular interest. Thus, we provide a comprehensive overview of the maturity of open-source platforms in IoT using seven criteria: documentation quality, maintenance, machine learning (ML) support for analysis, GUI support, scalability, interoperability, and use-case coverage. Based on these criteria four DT platforms are compared and discussed: Eclipse Ditto, Eclipse BaSyx, Snap4City DT (SCDT) and White Label DT. Our analysis shows that while each platform has strengths in specific areas, overall usability depends on the intended application, with SCDT standing out due to its integrated real-time ML capabilities despite similar maturity levels in other aspects.
