Reduced Bfloat Mode Switching on Precision Modulated Shading for Mobile GPU

In this paper, we propose a method to reduce GPU power consumption while maintaining image quality when using Precision Modulated Shading (PMS). PMS saves power by dynamically adjusting precision based on the sensitivity of instructions. We introduce enhanced PMS logic to solve image corruption issues by employing a heuristic algorithm that considers branch instructions to make accurate decisions. To further mitigate the overhead associated with switching Bfloat modes in the microarchitecture, a more aggressive mode heuristic algorithm is proposed. When applied to the Aztec High GPU benchmark, our algorithm achieved an average PSNR of 52.47 dB and a ^minimum PSNR of 47.4 dB. Moreover, GPU power consumption decreased by 1.99%, and FPS/Watt performance improved by 2.51 %.
