Oil Palm Fruit Ripeness Detection Technique: Analysis, Challenges, and Opportunities

Detecting the ripeness of oil palm fruit is a critical aspect of the agribusiness industry to ensure optimal palm oil quality. This study examines various technological approaches to ripeness detection, including RGB cameras, Near-Infrared (NIR) sensors, and artificial intelligence-based algorithms such as K-Nearest Neighbour (KNN), Regression, Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Neural Network-based algorithms. The analysis reveals that RGB cameras combined with Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) excel in real-time color and texture pattern detection, while NIR technology enables non-destructive analysis of physiological characteristics. Key challenges such as environmental influences and sensor calibration limitations in field conditions are discussed, along with potential solutions such as integrating UAVs and employing multispectral sensors to enhance detection accuracy. This study concludes that combining multi-sensor technology and deep learning algorithms offers significant potential for implementation in precision agriculture. Further research is proposed to optimize these solutions under diverse field conditions.
