A Review of Construction and Demolition Waste Management in Lagos

It is anticipated that as Nigeria's construction industry expands, there will be a sizable demand-supply gap for building supplies such aggregates, sand, and limestone. More of this economic need has been seen in Lagos State, which is the most economically viable state. However, it is confronted with the difficulty of attaining sustainability on building sites. The environment of Lagos is significantly impacted by the massive amounts of rubbish produced by construction and demolition activities. Moreover, in some locations, especially on residential, institutional, industrial, or commercial construction sites, the enormous amount of unprocessed construction and demolition (C&D) waste presents significant challenges. C&D measurement is a way of knowing where we stand in our journey to sustainable construction. Although a number of waste quantification techniques have been put out in the literature, there is insufficient documentation regarding the quantification of construction waste generation in Lagos. The reasons for this insufficiency include the contractor's ignorance of the C&D waste processing procedure, the high amount of offcuts produced on by subpar design, rework, and variations, the absence of a suitable hierarchical control system, and the lack of a standard approach for estimating C&D waste. This review covers the literatures relating to construction and demolition waste management practice in Lagos, Nigeria. Additionally, several government acts, existing regulations and challenges, policies, and strategy documents were collected and reviewed. This investigation found that the states' insufficient landfill fees and regulations enabled the cross-jurisdiction transportation of rubbish. After analyzing the problems with common processes, it was determined that construction design stage had the best chance of reducing waste. provides guidance for future research and suggests an information framework for the systematic collection, storage, processing, and disposal of construction and demolition debris.
